Under NREGA, poor laborers living in rural areas do work like irrigation, road construction, dam construction, pond construction, digging wells, etc. In return, they are paid their wages. Congress attacked the decision, saying the government was weaponizing Aadhaar to deny benefits of social welfare schemes to poor and vulnerable sections of society.
MNREGA is counted among the largest guarantee programs in the world. Under this scheme, the government wants to reduce poverty and unemployment rates in rural areas.
Apart from this, the government is working on the development of rural infrastructure under the MNREGA program. Under this program, women living in marginal areas are also being empowered.
