What is UP's mass marriage scheme?
At the beginning of the year 2024, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath started the mass marriage scheme to benefit the needy people of the state. Under this scheme, the government provides financial assistance of Rs 51,000 to the daughters of poor families.
This amount is sent directly to the bank account by the government. The purpose of this scheme is that poor parents do not have to face financial problems for the marriage of their daughters. Some wedding items are also provided by the government under this scheme.
Who can apply for the scheme?
To apply in this scheme, the age of the girl should be 18 years or above at the time of marriage. Whereas the age of the boy should be 21 years or above. Only daughters of BPL ration card-holder families can apply for this scheme.
At the same time, women are also given benefits for remarriage in this scheme. Women whose marriage has broken due to some reason or have got divorced can also apply for marriage under this scheme.
Why is there a controversy?
While the UP government has brought this scheme for the poor and the needy, many people are also taking benefits in this scheme in a fraudulent manner. Some time ago, an already-married couple in Ballia took advantage of this scheme by marrying again. Recently, a similar case has come to light from Mainpuri. After this, the government suspended many employees from their jobs.
