Cancer is one of the leading risk factors for death worldwide, killing millions of people every year. Although the risk of cancer can occur in many parts of the body, cases of lung cancer have been reported to be increasing rapidly in the last decade.
According to the American Cancer Society report, in the US alone, about 238,340 new cases of lung cancer (117,550 in men and 120,790 in women) will be recorded in the year 2023. More than 1.27 lakh people also died due to this cancer. The month of November is celebrated as 'Lung Cancer Awareness Month' to increase awareness among people about the risk of lung cancer and educate them about preventive measures.
Health experts say, due to lifestyle disturbances, the risk of developing lung cancer may be higher. Some risk factors can increase problems for you too, which need to be given serious attention.
Lung cancer problem
The lungs are an essential organ for carrying oxygen in the body. In the case of cancer, cells in your lungs start growing uncontrollably. Damaged cells can divide uncontrollably and form tumors. The early symptoms of this cancer can often be similar to other lung and respiratory problems, which can make it difficult for people to recognize it.
Health experts say, two lifestyle habits are considered to be the main factors of this cancer, if you also have these habits then be alert immediately.
Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer
People who smoke have the highest risk of lung cancer, doctors say, although cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked. If you quit smoking, your risk of developing this cancer can also be reduced.
In the United States, approximately 80–90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by cigarette smoking. Using other tobacco products such as cigars or pipes may also increase the risk of cancer.
Coming in contact with smoking smoke is also dangerous
Smoking is considered the main cause of lung cancer. However, people who do not smoke and are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work may also be at risk for developing this cancer. Cases of lung cancer have also increased significantly due to secondhand smoking.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that smoking causes nine out of 10 cases of lung cancer in men and eight out of 10 cases in women.
How to avoid lung cancer
There is no sure way to prevent lung cancer, but by taking some precautions you can reduce its risk.
Do not smoke at all, or be exposed to secondhand smoke.
Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise a week.
If there is some problem in the lungs, then definitely consult a doctor on time and get it checked.
