Gave my brother a ticket to go abroad…

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad district of Gujarat. His father's name was Jhaverbhai Patel and his mother's name was Ladba Ben. His father was a farmer. There is a famous story about Sardar Patel that he wanted to go to England to study law. His ticket to England was V.J. It was in the name of Patel. When he came to know that his elder brother also wanted to go to England to study law, he happily gave him his ticket. Patel was rich in such a selfless spirit.

Kept fighting the case even after his wife passed away…

Sardar Patel started his law practice in Gujarat itself. Once he was fighting a case in the court when a letter came to him. Sardar Patel read that letter and kept it in his pocket and started fighting the case again. When the hearing was over, the judge asked him what was written in that letter, to which he said that his wife had died. Everyone was left speechless after hearing this. Such was the strong spirit of our Sardar Patel.

For this reason, he was called Patel…

In 1928, Sardar Patel united the farmers in Bardoli and organized a movement against the increased land tax by the British. Due to drought in Bardoli, farmers were not able to grow any crops and hence could not pay taxes. Even after requesting the British government, they did not agree to waive the tax. Then the farmers of Bardoli started a movement under the leadership of Vallabhbhai Patel, which is known as the Bardoli Movement. This movement was successful and since then Vallabhbhai Patel came to be called Sardar.

This is how the Iron Man of India became…

After independence, more than 500 princely states, which were ruling their territories independently, were included in the Indian Union by Sardar Patel. That too without resorting to any kind of violence. Because of his admirable willpower and determination to unite India, he is called the Iron Man of India.
