During this time, he used to walk miles to study. When Shastri was 16 years old, he decided to join the freedom struggle and left his studies. At the age of 17, he was arrested during the independence movement and sent to jail but was freed because he was a minor.

Shastri ji had gone to meet Pakistani President Ayub Khan in Tashkent to reach an agreement on the situation after the India-Pakistan war. However, he died suddenly a few hours after meeting the Pakistani President. It is said that his health was absolutely fine. However, the cause of death was said to be a heart attack.
