Many people like to travel by train. In such a situation, Indian Railways provides many types of facilities to the passengers. Whenever passengers book train tickets, they get the option of Auto-Upgradation. In this service, passengers can upgrade their ticket class.
This means that if a passenger takes a sleeper class ticket, he can upgrade his ticket to 3rd AC for free. Passengers can select the option of auto-upgrade while booking tickets online and offline.
In the auto upgrade, if a seat is available in Third AC, Second AC, and First AC coach, then passengers can upgrade it as per their ticket. Passengers get this facility either free or paid.
When can you upgrade your ticket for free?
You can upgrade your ticket before or during your journey. If passengers upgrade their tickets during the journey, they are required to pay additional charges. Whereas, if the passenger chooses the option of auto upgradation while booking the ticket, then he can upgrade the ticket for free. The seat can be upgraded only if the seat is available on the train.
On what basis is seat upgrade done?
Indian Railways started the Auto-Upgradation Scheme in the year 2006. The option of auto upgradation is given to the passenger at the top of the reservation form. This option is also offered on the IRCTC app and online portal. After the chart is prepared, Railways considers upgrading the ticket.
The upgrade is done automatically by PRS (Passenger Reservation System) while preparing the chart.
