The day of 15 January is very important in the history of India. On this day in 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa took command of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher. For this reason, every year 15 January is celebrated as Indian Army Day. General Francis Butcher was the last British Commander in Chief of India. At present the Indian Army is counted among the largest armies in the world. The Indian Army is also modernizing in the rapidly changing world. With time new equipment, modern weapons, and military transport are being inducted into the Indian Army. The Indian Army has fought many important battles in history. There have been a total of 4 wars between India and Pakistan so far. India has won all these wars.

Apart from this, many times India has had minor skirmishes with Pakistan and China over border disputes. In this series, today we are going to tell you about some selected achievements of the Indian Army.

Kashmir War of 1947-48
After independence, there was a war between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. Pakistan attacks Kashmir to capture it. Indian Army goes to Kashmir at the request of Hari Singh, the then ruler of Kashmir. After this, the Indian Army forces the Pakistani Army to retreat from a large part of Kashmir. Ultimately this war ended with a ceasefire at the request of the United Nations.

India-Pakistan war of 1965
In this war, India gave a befitting reply to Pakistan. This was the time when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru died and Lal Bahadur Shastri became the new Prime Minister of India. In such a situation, Pakistan starts its military operation in Kashmir under Operation Gibraltar. After this, the Indian Army retaliates and attacks the Pakistani Army. In this counter-attack, the Pakistani army is forced to retreat. After the end of the war, both countries signed the Tashkent Agreement. In this agreement, both the countries promised to observe the ceasefire and resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully.

Bangladesh war of 1971
The India-Bangladesh War of 1971 is also known as the Bangladesh Liberation War. Due to internal rebellion in the then East Pakistan (presently Bangladesh), a large number of Bangladeshis were forced to take refuge in India. After the coup by Pakistan, the situation in East Pakistan had become very serious at that time. After this coup, a rebellion begins there. The rebellious people together form Mukti Vahini. After this, India declares war against Pakistan, supporting the Mukti Bahini which rebels against the Pakistani army. The result of the war is that Bangladesh became an independent country by separating from Pakistan.

Kargil War of 1999
This was the fourth war fought between India and Pakistan. As soon as the information about the infiltration of the Pakistani Army in Kashmir is received, the Indian Army immediately starts retaliating. As a result, the Pakistani army is forced to retreat. India wins this war. However, both countries had to face heavy losses in this war.
