The shortest national highway in India is NH 548. It has the shortest route in the whole of India and due to this; this highway is counted as the shortest highway of India. India's shortest highway is just 5 kilometers long. This highway is in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Its northern end is connected to Kalamboli and its southern end to Navi Mumbai. Before National Highway 548, India's shortest highway was 47A and it connects Cuddalore to Willingdon Island, located in the Cochin district of Kerala state of India. This national highway is now known as 966B.

There are more than 500 National Highways in India and as per the report of 2023, there are 599 National Highways in India, which are connecting one state to another. These national highways constitute only 1.8 percent of Indian roads but they reduce about 40 percent of the country's traffic.
