The death of a 25-year-old youth in Delhi Zoo last Monday has once again drawn attention to the increasing risk of heart attack and stroke among the youth. Expressing concern, doctors have advised the youth to be conscious about their diet and lifestyle. Besides, he also stressed regular health checkups.

Dr. Sameer Kubba, Director of the Cardiology Department, at Dharamsheela Narayan Superspeciality Hospital, said that such incidents remind us of the need for regular checkups in the early stages. He further said that with the important role of lifestyle factors in urban areas, the prevalence of coronary artery disease and subsequent heart disease is increasing. The main solution to deal with this is to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle and start treatment as soon as possible.

Causes of stroke in youth
* Abnormal obesity, sedentary lifestyle
* High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking
* Certain medical conditions, genetics predispositions, and even environmental factors
* Increasing cases of obstructive sleep apnea due to stress, lack of sleep, obesity are among the risk factors for stroke, which are generally not taken into account.

Doctors advice
* Walk 30-45 minutes daily
* Meditate.
* Take regular medicines for diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.
* Do not exercise more than the physical capacity of the body.
* Get regular checkups done.
* Get your entire body checked once a year.
* Take 6-8 hours of sleep.
