Are you troubled by the problem of staying awake late at night? Do you not get deep and restful sleep? If yes, then you are not alone. Insomnia is a common problem that affects millions of people around the world. But don't worry, there is a solution to this problem! Exercise is an effective way to fight insomnia.

According to a recent study published in BMJ Open Journal , exercising can be very beneficial for you in case of insomnia. Dr. Erla Bjornsdottir, the lead author of the study, says that physically active people have less risk of insomnia symptoms and the problem of getting too little or too much sleep.

The study

analyzed data from more than 4,300 people aged 39 to 67 over a period of 10 years. The participants involved in the study were selected from nine European countries. They were asked about the frequency, intensity and duration of their physical activity as well as insomnia symptoms, amount of sleep each night and feeling sleepy during the day.

Result of the study:

The study showed that people who exercised regularly were 55% more likely to sleep normally (getting 6 to 9 hours of sleep at night). At the same time, people who were physically active during the study period were 21% more likely to sleep normally. These data were adjusted for age, gender, body mass index (BMI) and smoking history.

Dr. Erla said in an email that our results are consistent with previous studies that have shown the beneficial effects of physical activity on insomnia symptoms, but this study additionally shows the importance of consistency in exercise over time. Therefore, it is important to remain physically active throughout life to reduce the risk of insomnia and short sleep duration.
