Deep rooted fear
Corona has told the whole world what is the fear of virus infection. Starting in the last months of the year 2019, the fear and aftereffects of this virus, which engulfed the whole world, have not completely ended yet and the Marburg virus has created a ruckus in African countries. Although this virus is not new and the news of its infection has been coming in the past as well, this time the scale at which its infection is spreading has given sleep to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The death rate is 88 per cent
The most frightening thing about the Marburg virus is that the death rate among people infected with it is up to 88 per cent. That is, out of 100 people, it is almost impossible to save the lives of 88 people. Talking about Marburg virus infection and its symptoms, Dr Jitendra Narayan, Senior Scientist at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) says that Marburg is a virus of the same Filoviridae family from which the Ebola virus comes. And it spreads mainly through bats.
What are the symptoms of the Marburg virus?
high fever
Terrible headache
vomiting blood
bleeding with motion
bleeding nose
severe joint pain
extreme tiredness and weakness
Currently, there is no vaccine for it
Talking about the latest virus infection, Dr Jitendra Narayan says that the Marburg virus infection that is spreading in Equatorial Guinea is the fastest spread of this virus after the year 2004-05. In the last 10 years, only a few cases of infection of this virus were reported. However, in the year 2004-05, 252 people were reported to be infected with this virus in Angola, out of which 227 died. This virus is considered dangerous like Ebola and it is spreading the infection very fast. The matter of concern is that there is no vaccine available for this yet.
What is the treatment for the Marburg virus?
On the investigation and treatment of the Marburg virus, Dr Narayan says that in many cases it can be difficult to differentiate the symptoms of this virus from malaria, typhoid fever, shigellosis, meningitis, and other infectious fevers in which bleeding starts from the body. That's why antigen detection tests, serum neutralization tests, RT-PCR and cell culture methods are used to check this virus. After confirmation, medicines are used based on symptoms and efforts are made to prevent dehydration by giving a liquid diet, glucose etc. to the patient.
