What are goosebumps?
There is a term for sudden erection of body hair which is called piloerection. In common language, you call this getting goosebumps. This happens when the piloerector muscles contract. These small muscles are connected to your follicles. This is a kind of voluntary response of the sympathetic nervous system.
This is similar to the way piloerection is triggered in an animal's body when it feels cold or for some other reason.
Are Goosebumps related to music and emotions?
Hmmmm, has it ever happened to you that you got goosebumps after listening to a very emotional and sentimental song? Have you felt this way after watching a movie?
In 2011, the journal Biology Psychology published a study in which experts measured the goosebumps effect of a group through film and music. The superhit song 'My Heart Will Go On' from the film Titanic contributed the most to this ratio.
At the same time, in another similar study, it was told that we have two different brains, emotional and thinking, which respond differently in different situations. Our emotional brain triggers automatic psychological reactions in emotional situations, which cause goosebumps. Similarly, when you listen to sentimental songs, you feel like this.
Goosebumps arise in case of happy hormones and fear.
When you experience extreme emotions, your body reacts differently. Two common responses include increased electrical activity in the muscles beneath the skin and increased depth or heaviness of breathing. These two reactions trigger goosebumps.
Due to this, you sometimes start sweating and your heart rate increases. These intense emotions are associated with responses to seeing, hearing, understanding, tasting and touch.
If you get scared or sad, that also causes goosebumps.
At the same time, when we experience something good or are happy, we get a dopamine hit. This is a feel-good hormone, due to which we feel good goosebumps.
Are goosebumps also caused by any medical condition?
Although goosebumps do not indicate any specific condition. This happens due to an emotional trigger. However, if you often feel goosebumps, it may be due to a medical condition – keratosis pilaris, a condition that causes goosebumps to remain on the skin for a long time. Sometimes this can also happen due to some kind of injury that can affect the nervous system. Additionally, patients may experience goosebumps due to severe chills or fever caused by influenza.
