The Bureau of Police Research and Development, a think tank of the Union Home Ministry, has issued a warning and advisory to consumers regarding cybercrime and financial fraud on WhatsApp. It has identified seven types of frauds which include missed calls, video calls, fraud in the name of job offers and investment schemes, hijacking, and screen sharing.
The eight-page warning and advisory states that in hijacking scams, scammers gain unauthorized access to the victim's WhatsApp account contact them and demand money.
Some people even receive WhatsApp video calls from unknown numbers and are threatened by making objectionable videos. They also ask for money in exchange for blackmail. BPRD is a think tank on policing topics under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
