Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav introduced the Data Protection Bill 2023 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday (August 3). The bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha through a voice vote. Opposition MPs objected to the introduction of the proposed law and demanded it be referred to a parliamentary committee. Violation will attract a fine of up to Rs 250 crore
The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 (DPDP) was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav on Thursday, 3 August, during the Monsoon Session of Parliament in New Delhi. The new Data Protection Bill will help rein in social media companies and reduce their arbitrariness. According to the new Data Protection Bill 2023, entities that misuse or fail to protect users' digital data may face a fine of up to Rs 250 crore.
An entity violating the rules can be fined a maximum of Rs 250 crore and a minimum of Rs 50 crore. The new Bill lays down the rights of individuals as well as the obligations of entities handling and processing data.
According to the new Bill, "no rule shall be made against the Central Government, the Board, its Chairman and any member, officer or employee thereof for anything which is in good faith done or intended to be done under this Act or the provisions thereof." No suit, prosecution, or other legal proceedings shall be instituted." Under the Bill, the Central Government is also empowered to block content in the interest of the general public on receipt of a written reference from the Board.
Bill will protect the rights of citizens- Rajeev Chandrasekhar
Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that this bill, once passed by the Parliament, will protect the rights of all citizens, help expand the innovation economy, and ensure national security and legitimate access of the government to emergencies like pandemics and earthquakes, etc. will allow.
There was also opposition to the data protection bill.
The Data Protection Bill 2023 introduced in the Lok Sabha was opposed by TMC MP Saugata Roy, Congress MP Manish Tiwari, and AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi. Opposing the Data Protection Bill, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary said I oppose this bill. Through this bill, the government wants to trample the Right to Information Act. That's why we will oppose such an objective. This bill should be sent to the Standing Committee for discussion.
