Sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy, cinnamon not only changes the taste, but is also considered very beneficial for health. A recent research has revealed that consumption of cinnamon can also be helpful in controlling sugar level. This news is good for those who have pre-diabetes.

A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tried to find out how cinnamon consumption affects blood sugar levels. In this double-blind crossover trial, people were given 4 grams of cinnamon daily for 4 weeks. After this they were compared with a control group which was not given cinnamon. The results of the study were quite good.

4 grams cinnamon is enough
The results showed that people who consumed 4 grams of cinnamon daily had significantly lower fasting blood sugar levels compared to the control group. This indicates that cinnamon may play a role in improving glucose metabolism in the body. Researchers believe that cinnamon can do this by affecting the intestinal microbiome.

Include cinnamon in daily diet
However, how cinnamon works in reducing blood sugar is not yet fully known. But the results of this study indicate that including cinnamon in the daily diet may be beneficial for those who are at risk of diabetes.

More research needed
In further research, an attempt will be made to find out which active ingredients (bioactive compounds) in cinnamon work to reduce blood sugar. Besides, an attempt will also be made to know what role cinnamon can play in controlling prediabetes and reducing the risk of diabetes.
