Call of Duty game players have come under the target of hackers. These players are being infected by hackers with malware that automatically spreads in online lobbies. According to media reports, a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 player has warned other players on the Steam forum. The warning states that hackers attack using hacked lobbies and it is advised to use antivirus.
Another player claimed to have analyzed the malware and said in the same forum thread that the malware looks like a worm based on several text strings inside the malware. The presence of those strings in malware indicates a worm virus. Neil Wood, a spokesman for Activision, which released the game in 2009, confirmed the malware. Wood also referenced a tweet posted by the company on Thursday from its 'Call of Duty Updates' account.
In his tweet, Wood said that while we investigate reports of an issue, multiplayer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on Steam was taken offline. He said that it is still not clear why the hackers are spreading this malware. The malware is a worm and automatically spreads from one infected gamer to another through online lobbies.
The report states that this means hackers may have found one or more bugs in the game and are exploiting them to spread malware to execute malicious code on other players' computers.
