West Bengal celebrates this festival as Saraswati Puja and Punjab and Bihar as the festival of kites. It is also celebrated in Nepal. Some people also celebrate Basant Panchami as a day when Goddess Parvati begged Lord Shiva from Kama to wake up from long yogic meditation. The day is also called Saraswati Puja and is also celebrated in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Mainly the people of Punjab celebrate this day as the spring festival of kites. Children and adults buy “Patang” and “Dor”. Ingredients to make:

  • Moong Dal 1 cup
  • Ghee 1/2 cup
  • Sugar 1 cup
  • Water 1/2 cup
  • Milk 2 cups
  • Chopped almonds 2-3 tbsp
  • a pinch of saffron

  • Clean the moong dal thoroughly. Now wash it and filter it with a sieve, so that all the water comes out of it. Now spread the dal on a clean cloth so that it dries.
  • Now grind the lentils coarsely in the mixie.
  • Heat ghee in a pan and add ground lentils to it. Fry the dal till it turns light brown. This process will take about 7-8 minutes.
  • Now add water to it and let it melt. When the water dries up, add milk to it and mix. Let it cook for 20 minutes.
  • Now add sugar to it and stir for a while and then add almonds and saffron to it and serve.
