Announcing the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee to keep the repo rate unchanged, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das proposed to enable 'Conversational Payments' on UPI.
Das said it will enable users to interact with artificial intelligence (AI) powered systems to make payments. Later, the RBI also released the Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies giving more details on the proposal.
Will use AI
The statement said that as artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into the digital economy, ease of use of conversational instructions and consequently access to the UPI system hold great potential.
The facility will be available in these languages
The statement also added that the facility will be available on both smartphone and feature phone-based UPI channels. It will be made available initially in Hindi and English and later will be made available in more Indian languages as well. Let us know that instructions to NPCI will be issued soon.
UPI payment using NFC technology
In addition, Das also proposed to introduce offline payments on UPI using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology through the 'UPI Lite' on-device wallet.
The statement issued later said that this facility will not only enable retail digital payments in situations where internet/telecom connectivity is weak or not available, but it will also ensure speed with minimum transaction degradation.
