The Central Government has announced to extend the deadline for linking Aadhaar with Ration Card. The deadline, which was earlier on June 30, 2023, has now been extended to September 30, 2023. The decision, communicated through a gazette notification from the Department of Food and Public Distribution, has important implications for the welfare system.

The primary objective behind linking Aadhaar with ration cards is to address the issue of individuals having multiple ration cards. Ration cards, which play a key role in providing subsidized food grains and kerosene to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, are similar to other essential identity documents such as passports, Aadhaar cards, and voter ID cards.

Ration cards act as a means of establishing one's identity and address, allowing individuals to seamlessly access the welfare schemes of the government.

However, it had come to the notice of the government that many people have multiple ration cards, allowing them to exploit the system and get a bulk of ration items. This presents a serious obstacle to the fair distribution of needs, especially to those who are really in need.

With the Aadhaar-ration card linkage initiative, the government aims to rectify this issue and establish a proper distribution mechanism. By linking Aadhaar with a ration card, individuals will no longer be able to hold more than one card. In addition, strict measures will be implemented to prevent anyone from exceeding his entitled ration quota.
