Who was Shakuntala?

The story of Shakuntala and Dushyanta is in the Adiparva chapter of the Mahabharata. Famous poet Kalidas wrote Abhigyan Shakuntalam in this chapter which became very famous. According to mythology, when she was the daughter of sage Vishwamitra and Apsara Menaka, she was named Shakuntala. Menaka had returned to heaven after giving birth to Shakuntala, Rishi Kanva had brought up Shakuntala.

How did Dushyant-Shakuntala's love story begin?

Once King Dushyant was out hunting in the forest, when he reached the hermitage of sage Kanva he saw Shakuntala, seeing her beauty the king was fascinated and proposed marriage to her. Shakuntala accepted the proposal, at that time sage Kanva had gone on a faraway journey. Both got married for love. But sage Kanva was not there so she did not go with the king. Dushyant promised Shakuntala that he would take her as soon as Rishi Kanva arrived. Shakuntala became pregnant and was lost in Dushyant's thoughts day and night.

Sage Durvasa cursed Shakuntala

Sage Durvasa is known for his angry nature. Once sage Kanva was not in the cottage and sage Durvasa arrived there. Shakuntala was engrossed in the thoughts of King Dushyant and did not listen to the voice of sage Durvasa even when he called her several times. Durvasa Rishi got angry and said that the person in whose thoughts you have unheard me, that person will forget you. Due to the effect of this curse, Dushyant forgets Shakuntala and does not come to pick her up. Pregnant Shakuntala herself reaches Hastinapur and tells them that she is going to be the mother of their child but Dushyant does not recognize her and expels Shakuntala.

Shakuntala goes back and starts living in a forest by making a hut there she gives birth to a bright son. She names him Bharat. On the other hand, Raja finds Shakuntala's ring and remembers everything, he searches for Shakuntala but cannot find her. One day the king sees a bright child counting the teeth of a lion, he is surprised to see the child and he takes him in his lap, then Shakuntala comes there and tells the king that he is her son. The king is overjoyed and returns to the palace with his wife and son and starts living together. Later on, this country is named Bharat after the name of Bharat.
