Mumbai has always been a favorite destination for people, be it locals or tourists from abroad. Apart from the association with the Bollywood industry, Mumbai offers various places where you can experience adventure. One such place is the Kalavantin Fort, which is located atop the Sahyadri Mountains near Mumbai and is considered one of the most dangerous forts globally. Surprisingly, this fort is situated at an altitude of 2,300 feet above sea level. In its heyday, it was mainly used for surveillance purposes. The path is dangerous:

To reach this fort one has to undertake a challenging journey, and the path to reach here is not easy. You have to go through rocky terrain, often requiring the use of ropes to climb. However, once you reach the summit, the breathtaking views will make you feel as if you have entered heaven.

Where is this fort:

Kalavantin Fort is located just 47 kilometers from Mumbai. The journey to the fort starts from Thakurwadi village. To reach here you will have to take a train from Mumbai to Panvel. From there you can catch a bus. It takes about an hour to reach Thakurwadi. Once you leave the station, you can hire a shared rickshaw to Shedung Phata, and from there, another shared auto-rickshaw will take you to Thakurwadi.

Consider your health:

Due to the challenging terrain and steep climbs, it is important to be in good physical condition when attempting this trek. Avoid planning your trip during the monsoon season as the road can be slippery and dangerous. The best time to visit Kalavantin Fort is from October to March.

Cost:

If you are planning to trek alone, you can spend up to Rs 150 for a local guide. Some travel groups may charge you between Rs 800 to Rs 1000 for the experience. Some companies also provide overnight stay and camping facilities at the fort.
