Arunachal Pradesh was earlier known as North East Frontier Agency (NEFA). The state has international borders with Bhutan, Tibet, China, and Myanmar in the west, north, and east respectively. The border of Arunachal Pradesh also meets with Nagaland and Assam. The state has hilly and semi-hilly terrain. Its mountains slope towards the plains of the state of Assam. Rivers like 'Kameng', 'Subansiri', 'Siang', 'Lohit' and 'Tirap' divide it into different valleys. The history here is not available in written form. There is little literature and historical ruins in the form of oral tradition that can be found in this mountainous region. Through the excavation and analysis of these places, it is known that they belong to the beginning of the Christian era. Historical evidence shows that it was not only a well-known region but also the people who lived here and had close relations with other parts of the country. The modern history of Arunachal Pradesh dates back to the introduction of British rule in Assam on 24 February 1826 after the 'Yandabu Treaty'. Before 1962, this state was known as North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). Constitutionally, it was a part of Assam, but due to its strategic importance, till 1965, the Ministry of External Affairs looked after its administration. After 1965, the administration here came under the Ministry of Home Affairs by the Governor of Assam. In the year 1972, Arunachal Pradesh was made a Union Territory, and its name was changed to 'Arunachal Pradesh'. After all this, on 20 February 1987, it was made the 24th state of the Indian Union.
