It is believed that at the time when the Asuras were about to reach heaven, to stop them, Shri Hari had asked for his body from Gayasura for Yajna through Brahma ji. Then Gayasur lay down and his body spread to five koshas. Pleased with this, the deities gave a boon to Gayasur that the person who performed the Shraddha and Tarpan of the ancestors at this place would get salvation.
Sudhmahadev, Jammu and Kashmir
This town, located in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, is named after a demon named Sishant, a devotee of Lord Shankar. Sushant was a devotee of Shankar ji, but one day he started threatening Parvati ji, and getting angry with this, Shiv ji killed him with Trishul. The 'Kullu Valley' of Himachal Pradesh is famous all over the country for its beauty. It is named after the demon 'Kulant'. In ancient times, the name of this place used to be 'Kulanthapith'. It means the end of the habitable world. It is said that one day the demon 'Kulant' turned into a python and sat on the way of the Beas river by coiling around it. By doing this, he wanted to end the world by immersing himself in water. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he killed this demon. After death, the whole body of the 'Kulant' demon turned into a mountain which was called 'Kullu Valley'.
