In India, AI is no longer just a technology but has become an everyday part of digital life, be it chatting, online payments or apps that show videos and shopping suggestions based on your preferences.
(How much will the new AI rules change the way phones are operated?)
Artificial Intelligence: In India, AI is no longer just a technology, but has become an everyday part of digital life, whether it's chatting, online payments, or apps that show you personalized videos, news, and shopping suggestions. As the scope of AI expands, so too does the question of how this powerful technology will be controlled and how the safety of ordinary citizens will be ensured.
The introduction of clear disclosures and transparency in AI apps
The biggest change in users' digital experience after the new rules come into effect will be transparency. The government has clearly stated that AI systems should be "Understandable by Design," meaning that users should receive simple and understandable disclosures about the AI being used in any app.
The effect of this will be that any AI-generated content you see on your screen, chatbot conversations, or recommendations from apps like shopping and loans will need to clearly explain the reasons behind them. Algorithms will no longer be able to hide their decisions.
The government has also clarified that transparency across the entire AI value-chain, from design, development to operation, is essential so that any mistakes or misuse can be addressed promptly.
Strict controls on deepfakes and dangerous AI content
Deepfakes are a major concern among the growing misuses of AI. Fake videos, voices, and images pose a serious threat to people's privacy and security. The guidelines describe this as a rapidly growing threat to society and call for immediate action.
The government wants AI-generated videos and photos to come with watermarks to make it easier to distinguish between real and fake content. Platforms will also need to develop systems to detect deepfakes. The document specifically notes that women are the most vulnerable to AI-based non-consensual content, requiring separate safeguards and strict legal action.
Strict data privacy rules and user rights
User data is crucial to training AI models. Therefore, the government has clearly stated that AI systems must comply with India's data protection laws.
Explicit consent will be required before any user's data can be used in AI models. Users will also need to be informed about the purpose for which their data is being collected and how it will be used. In the future, users may also have the right to transfer their data to other services (data portability), further enhancing digital freedom.
Fast resolution of complaints if there is a loss due to AI
The guidelines place a special focus on grievance redressal. The government mandates that every company and platform must establish a system where users can easily lodge complaints about any AI-related harm. This will require multi-language support, prompt response, and clear resolution information. It also recommends the creation of a National AI Incident Database, where all AI-related incidents will be recorded to help identify risks in a timely manner.
Smartphones and the Internet are protected against cyberattacks
Misuse of AI could also take the form of cyberattacks, data poisoning, or system tampering. The guidelines warn of these risks and emphasize the need for robust security measures. This will lead to improved security across the digital ecosystem—whether it's apps, networks, or smartphones themselves. AI-based threat detection technologies and security audits will become commonplace.
Large-scale awareness campaign to increase AI literacy
The document repeatedly emphasizes the importance of educating the public about AI, how it works, its benefits, and its potential risks. The government is preparing to launch national training programs and public campaigns to help people identify deepfakes, understand false suggestions, and use the technology safely.
