Delhi Capitals fast bowler Avesh Khan has been asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stay in the UAE after the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) and join India's T20 World Cup team as a net bowler. The 24-year-old Avesh is the second fast bowler, after Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umran Malik, to be asked to join the team. If sources are to be believed, this fast bowler can get a place in the list of standby players. Apart from this, Venkatesh Iyer will also stay in UAE. India will start its campaign (T20 World Cup 2021) against Pakistan on 24 October.
A BCCI source close to the selection committee told news agency PTI, "The selectors have also decided to rope in Avesh with the team. Right now he will be included as a net bowler, but if the team management feels then he can be included in the main players. Avesh is capable of bowling at a fast pace and has so far picked up 23 wickets for Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL season, who will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier on Wednesday.
Avesh Khan is second only to Harshal Patel (32 wickets) in the list of highest wicket-takers. The source said, “Avesh bowls at an average speed of 142 to 145 kmph. He also gets good bounce from flat pitches and the support staff has been keeping an eye on him for some time now. Avesh also went to England as a standby with the Test team but had to return mid-tour due to a fractured finger during India's warm-up match against the combined county team.
