Shammi Silva ACC: Sri Lanka's Shammi Silva has recently been appointed the new President of the Asian Cricket Council, replacing India's Jay Shah, who recently vacated the post after three terms as ACC President.
Dubai: Jai Shah, who was the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has now become the chairman of the International Cricket Council. This means that now the world's highest body ICC will dance to his tunes. He is only the fifth Indian to reach this position. After assuming this big responsibility, Jai Shah now has to leave all his previous roles, including the chair of the Asian Cricket Council i.e. ACC.
Who is the new chief of ACC?
The countries playing cricket in the Asian continent have formed a separate organization of their own, whose aim is to promote cricket of 25 other countries including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan. The Asian Cricket Council was established in 1983. Jai Shah was handling the command of ACC for the last three years, but recently he vacated this post. Now he has been replaced by Shammi Silva of Sri Lanka.
Who is Shammi Silva?
Shammi Silva is currently the new President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Council. This will not be Shammi Silva's first role in the Asian Cricket Council. He has previously served as the Chairman of the Finance and Marketing Committee of this organization. Silva said in a statement issued here, 'It is a great honor to lead the Asian Cricket Council. Cricket is the heartbeat of Asia and I am looking forward to working closely with all member countries to elevate the game, provide opportunities to emerging talents and keep us all united.'
India won gold in Asian Games
India won the gold medal in the men's cricket final of Asian Games 2023 played in Hangzhou city of China. India won the toss in the title match and decided to bowl. It started raining during Afghanistan's innings, after which the match was cancelled. Later, India was declared the winner on the basis of higher preference.
