India's newly-appointed Test vice-captain KL Rahul could be seen leading Team India in the upcoming ODI series. Skipper Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test series due to a hamstring injury.

If Rohit does not recover until the start of the ODI series, then KL Rahul could lead the team.

KL Rahul in excellent form

The Indian cricket team is currently engaged in a three-match Test series, the first of which is being played at Centurion and here KL Rahul has scored a scintillating century as the opener. Due to KL Rahul's maturity in batting, the team management appointed him as the Test vice-captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma. KL Rahul is also the vice-captain in ODI cricket and in the absence of a regular captain he can be seen leading the team.

Rohit undergoes treatment at NCA

Rohit Sharma is currently undergoing treatment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bangalore. A BCCI source told the media on Monday that Rohit Sharma was not fully fit. Under such circumstances, it is unlikely that he will be sent for the ODI series on the tour of South Africa. If he does not recover on time, KL Rahul will be given the captaincy.

These players may get the opportunity

The ODI series could be announced anytime this week. Young opener Rituraj Gaikwad is also in good form and has done well in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. Apart from this, bowler Ravichandran Ashwin is also likely to get a place in the ODI series. Sources said that the selection committee will meet on January 30 or 31. The meeting will decide on Ashwin, Dhawan, Rituraj and Shreyas Iyer.
