The poor performance of England cricketers in the Ashes series has now jeopardized their participation in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022). According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is planning to conduct a full review of England's defeat. According to a report by Mirror.co.uk, England Cricket Director Ashley Giles will prepare a report, which will include several recommendations to improve the fortunes of the Test team. It will also consider stopping English cricketers from participating in the IPL.
The Indian T20 league usually lasts for two months. However, this year is set to be a long one with the introduction of two new teams. IPL 2022 is set to clash with the opening phase of England's Test summer, as the knockout phase is likely to overlap with their first Test against New Zealand in June.
IPL 2022 players' auction is going to be held in February, in which many players from England are expected to take part. So far, only Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali have been retained by their franchise out of England players.
It has also been learned that players participating in the IPL will be asked to reduce their time in India so that they can take part in some home games to prepare for the New Zealand Test.
On the other hand, former England players have repeatedly criticized the current players for emphasizing the IPL over international matches. Former England captain Michael Atherton had stressed the fact that cricketers should not miss out on national duties for the IPL T20 league. Atherton wrote in his column for the Times, "The major multi-format players are paid seven-figure sums, but unbelievably the ECB loses them for two months out of the year during the Indian Premier League."
He further said, “The players should be told that, once the ECB accepts the request to play in the IPL, the 12-month contract will remain the same. Giving a no-objection certificate to play in the IPL and other franchise competitions is contingent. It is in the best interest of the England team."
