In the Mann Ki Jeet session of Amar Ujala Samvad 2023, Virender Sehwag narrated many funny stories. Out of this, there was also an offer to become the coach of the Indian team. The Sultan of Multan told that he had got an offer to become the coach of Team India six years ago, but he did not want to and because of this, he turned it down. Sehwag also mentioned the dispute between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble during this period.
When Amar Ujala asked him the question why he is not coming forward to become the coach of the Indian team? In response to this, Sehwag said that I had applied for coaching but I was not selected. I also knew that I would not be selected. I was requested by the then BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary to apply for the post of coach. So he met me and told me that there is some rift between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble, so we want you to take over as coach. So I told him then that I do not want to become a coach, because I have played for the Indian team for almost 15 years, and in 15 years, I could hardly spend two months with my family.
What is the Virat-Kumble controversy?
Actually, in 2016, Anil Kumble became the coach of the Indian team. Then Virat Kohli was the captain of the Indian team in Tests. At the beginning of 2017, after Dhoni left the ODI-T20 captaincy, Virat became the coach of Team India in the limited-over format as well. However, then it was told in many media reports that there is no coordination between Virat and Kumble and there is a dispute between the two. According to media reports, some players had alleged that Kumble and Virat wanted to choose playing-11 as per their wish and due to this the controversy increased. After this, with the defeat in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, Kumble resigned from the post of coach. After this Ravi Shastri became the head coach of Team India.
Sehwag said- If I become the coach then the Indian team will have to give 8-9 months to return. My children are growing up. I want to spend time with them. He has to be taught cricket. Have to feed Want to tell about life. So Amitabh had said on this that no-no you go on a tour. Then stay if you feel like it, otherwise, it's okay. After this, I told my wife and children and asked them, they were very excited that you will travel back with Team India. So in this enthusiasm, I filled up, but I knew that I did not want to meet.
Sehwag said- I am not trying or applying to become a coach because once I join, I will have to travel back with Team India for eight-nine months and now my children need me. On this, Amar Ujala asked that after 15 years from today, when your children will grow up, will they think about this role. So on this, Sehwag jokingly said that yes, I will become a coach to get him selected. Then he started laughing and said it was a joke. For the time being, I want to be with my children for three to four years and teach them cricket.
