At least two people have been killed and at least a dozen others injured in violence in Ranchi over the arrest of BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who was suspended for making offensive remarks against the Prophet Mohammad.

Police personnel, including an IPS officer, were also injured in the violence. The system then imposed a curfew in some parts of the city late in the evening. The dead included 22-year-old Mohammad Kefi and 24-year-old Mohammad Sahil. Ranchi City SP Anshuman Kumar said both the men were shot dead. On the other hand, 8 rioters and 4 police personnel were injured in the violence and were shifted to Reims and another hospital for treatment. He said some people have been taken into custody and will be questioned. "The situation is under control," he said. Section 144 has been applied to the affected areas.

The mob, which had been protesting since Friday prayers in Rachi, went out of control. He pelted stones at the Hanuman temple located on the main road. Police had to shoot and lathi charge in the air to disperse the mob. Police officials said that Muslims had started demonstrations since morning, but after Friday prayers, the situation was stressed. Most shops and markets were closed following the protests. The mob, however, pelted police with stones, injuring several people. In protest of the violence, some people sat outside the Hanuman temple to read Hanuman Chalisa. Police announced curfew in some areas of Ranchi city to control the situation.

A curfew was imposed by the Ranchi District Tantra from Sujata Chowk to Firayalal Chowk and up to a distance of 500 meters on both sides of the main road, the Ranchi District Tantra said in a major evening order. Gathering of 5 or more people in the affected area is prohibited.

Meanwhile, after about 5:00 pm on the roadside road, the police marched the flags in the man's road and surrounding streets and warned the people on the loudspeaker not to leave the house.
