India wind energy: The whole world is emphasizing renewable energy. Under this, solar and wind energy is being produced on a large scale. India is also progressing continuously in this link. Let us know, what is the position of India in the production of wind energy.

According to the Energy Gap Report 2021 released by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), by the end of this century, the earth will warm by 2.7 degrees. Under the environmental agreement in Paris, the world has to limit this heat to 1.5 degrees. To achieve this ambitious goal, the world will have to cut greenhouse gas emissions by half in the next 8 years. For this, emphasis is being given to wind energy, but India is still far from achieving this goal.

wind power in the world

The share of wind energy in the world has doubled in the last 7 years, but it is still insufficient. In the year 2015, the production of wind power was 3.5 percent of the total energy, which has increased to 7% by the year 2021.

wind power in India

India comes at number four in the world in terms of wind power capacity. India has a total wind power generation capacity of 40 GW (40000 MW). The total electric power generation capacity of India is 400 GW. In this way, India's wind power capacity is 10 percent of the total power generation capacity, which is 3 percent better than the world average (7%).

wind power generation target

Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the last climate summit in Glasgow had announced India's wind energy targets to be 60GW by 2022 and 140GW by 2030. Government figures show that as of April 2022, India has been able to generate only 40.5GW of wind power. The Global Wind Report has expressed apprehensions that India may fall behind its wind power generation target of 10 GW by the year 2022.

No expected increase in wind power generation

Due to the covid 19 pandemic and market challenges, India's wind power industry has been affected. India recorded a decline of 2.49% between 2019-20 and 2020-201. Globally, India ranks fourth in installed wind capacity (40.52GW). It could not make it to the top five countries of the world in terms of setting up new plants in 2021. According to the Global Wind Report 2022, China tops the list by producing more than 80% of the new installed capacity globally. The report also predicted that despite India's best efforts, it would be able to add less than 20GW of wind power capacity in the next 5 years.

Half of the country's wind power from two states

Wind power accounts for 10.1% of the total installed power generation capacity in India. Out of which about half comes from two states Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. It is followed by Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
