Despite several reports of such scams, people are still falling prey to honey traps. A recent case from Bhopal highlights the issue.
In this case, a retired senior officer from Madhya Pradesh has become the victim of a honey trap gang. The gang allegedly exploited him and duped him of lakhs. When the threats continued, the officer fed up and reported the incident to the police, which brought the matter to light.
The officer was duped by a Russian girl. The gang trapped him in the name of a Russian girl and then made more than twenty videos of them in a hotel. They used these videos to blackmail him and threatened to make them public. They managed to extort more than Rs 1 crore from him. When the blackmailing did not stop, the retired officer finally lodged a police complaint.
Investigation revealed that the gang initially called the retired officer to a hotel to meet the alleged Russian girl. They then recorded twenty-seven videos and used them to blackmail him. One of the gang members, posing as a Crime Branch officer, intimidated the retired officer with the threat of arrest and extorted a lot of money from him. Eventually, the officer reported the criminals to the authorities. The police are now searching for the suspects and the alleged Russian woman involved in the scheme.
