Hong Kong's oldest university on Thursday removed a statue built-in in memory of those killed in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The operation went on overnight to destroy the statue. This statue, about 8 meters high, was on the university campus from the year 1997. It was known as the Pillars of the Shame. Hong Kong was handed over to China from the British colony in 1997 itself.

According to the report of the news agency AFP, the university staff used roofing sheets and plastic sheets for this so that no one could see the statue. The sounds of drilling could be heard throughout the night.

There were 50 victim faces in this statue. These were made by stacking them on each other. These were symbols of protesters killed by Chinese soldiers in Tiananmen Square in 1989. The presence of this statue in Hong Kong was a vivid example of Hong Kong's independence from China. Let us tell you that in China, news or photos related to Tiananmen Square are censored in large quantities.

In the last two years, China has become cautious about the protests taking place in Hong Kong. That's why the Xi Jinping government wants to mold Hong Kong in its form. China has closed two big newspapers here. In October last, the university administration had ordered the removal of the statue.
