The world's first such tunnel will be
This tunnel, situated at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet, will help in the quick and easy movement of troops and weapons to the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The tunnel passes through the Sela Pass and is expected to reduce the distance through Tawang to the China border by a few kilometers once the project is completed. Project Director Col Parikshit Mehra said that after the completion of the tunnel construction work on the Balipara-Chardwar-Tawang (BCT) road for Rs 700 crore, it will be the world's first to be built at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet. The longest will be a two-lane tunnel. 
Work expected to be completed by 2022
The tunnel is being constructed in the Nuranang area. The months of December, January, and February receive heavy snowfall during the harsh winters, due to which the movement of troops and arms is affected. At the same time, due to the ongoing standoff between India and China on the border in eastern Ladakh, the focus is on accelerating the movement of troops and weapons. This tunnel, being built at a height of 1.55 km long and 13,700 feet, has reached its last stage. It is expected that this project will be completed by 2022.
Distance will be reduced by 6 km
This tunnel is being built using the new Austrian tunneling method. With its construction, Tawang can be easily reached. This tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity. Colonel Mehra said the 1.55-km-long tunnel being built at Nuranang will reduce the travel time between Tawang and West Kameng districts by six kilometers and travel time by at least one hour.
