Amid rising tensions with China, a US regulator has expelled a unit of China Telecom Limited from the US market in view of the threat to national security. China Telecom Limited is one of the three largest public sector telecom companies in China.

An order from the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday required China Telecom (USA) Corporation to shut down the domestic interstate and international services in the US within 60 days.

The commission said Beijing could use the company to hide or intercept US communications. Apart from this, there were also fears of involvement in espionage and other harmful activities against the United States.

In the year 2019, the company had 335 million customers worldwide. It is claimed that China Telecom is the largest fixed-line and broadband operator in the world.
