What is Gamosa

Assam's Gamosa is a traditional garment of Assam, due to which it has its importance. It is a symbol of the culture and tradition there.

Many writers say that the word Gamosa has originated from the word 'Angocha'. Because it is also used like Angochha. The people of Assam give it to the elders and guests as a mark of respect.

How does it look?

Mostly you will see it in white color. It is worked on with two colors, red or green, on white cotton cloth. It is usually a white rectangular piece of cloth, with a border on three sides and a woven design on the fourth side. Although it is made of cotton cloth, for special occasions, it is also made of expensive fabrics like traditional Assamese Pat Silk and in different colors.

GI status received in 2022
This Gamosa of Assam was given GI status in 2022. This recognition provides legal protection to the unique identity of the product. It also helps in promoting the cultural heritage of the product and the local economy. When Gamosa got the GI tag, thousands of weavers celebrated it.
