Lifestyle and dietary irregularities are considered to be the main reason for many serious and chronic diseases increasing rapidly around the world. Health experts say that smoking can be a major factor for many health problems ranging from respiratory to cancer. Studies have found that people who smoke are at higher risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and serious respiratory problems like asthma-bronchitis.
World No Tobacco Day is celebrated every year on 31 May to raise awareness about the harmful side effects of tobacco and make people aware to reduce its consumption. Recent studies have found that cases of smoking are being seen more among youth, especially young women.
If smoking is not controlled, the diseases caused by it can put great pressure on the health sector.
Serious problems caused by smoking
The World Health Organization says that smoking is harmful to overall health, it causes millions of deaths every year and puts a huge burden on healthcare systems. Health experts say that smoking is usually known as a cause of lung and respiratory problems, but in reality, it is harmful to health in many other ways. Let's know about the health problems caused by smoking.
Can become a victim of heart diseases
The chemicals present in tobacco smoke damage blood vessels, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries). In this condition, blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart start decreasing. Due to obstruction of blood flow to the heart, the risk of serious and life-threatening problems like heart attack, angina (chest pain) and heart failure increases. Heart diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
Risk of stroke
Smoking increases blood pressure and also increases the chances of blood clots, which block the flow of blood to the heart as well as the brain. Disruption of blood supply to the brain can lead to the risk of stroke. This condition can lead to paralysis, difficulty in speaking, cognitive impairment, and in severe cases, even death. Stroke is considered one of the life-threatening health conditions.
Weakness in the immune system
The habit of smoking is also harmful to the immune system. Researchers said that the immunity of people who smoke regularly weakens over time, due to which the risk of infectious diseases also increases. In the case of smoking, the body's immune system is not able to fight the infection properly.
