Why is World Earth Day celebrated?

Keeping this in view, Earth Day is celebrated every year with different themes to spread awareness in society. Celebrating Earth Day started in the year 1970.
In the year 1969, at a special conference of UNESCO held in San Francisco, the date of celebrating Earth Day was fixed on 22 April.
It is noteworthy that Earth Day was planned to be held on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. However, later it was proposed to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 1970.
