Consume fiber-rich fruits
The fiber (both soluble and insoluble) found in fruits can help prevent blood sugar spikes by slowing digestion. It also limits the absorption of fat and cholesterol. This is why diabetic patients are advised to include fiber-rich items in their diet. These help control both blood sugar and cholesterol. Soluble fiber is found in apples, bananas, Brussels sprouts, and avocados.
Benefits of Antioxidant-Rich Fruits
Dark-colored fruits – such as dark red, purple, and blue fruits usually contain good amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidants are considered beneficial in reducing the problems caused by free radicals in the body. Fruits like blueberries and apples are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber. Berries can also be a great option for you. Fruits containing Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Manganese, Potassium can be consumed.
Avoid sweet fruits
Health experts say that in diabetes, those fruits that naturally contain more sugar should be consumed less or not at all. Avoid fruits with high glycemic index (GI). If a food has a GI score between 70 and 100, it may be high in sugar. Consume fruits like mango, dates, watermelon, and pineapple only on the doctor's advice.
Fruit Juice
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that drinking fruit juice increases blood sugar levels rapidly. Do not consume packed juice. If you want to consume fruit juice, then consume only fresh fruits. Select only those fruits that have low GI levels.
