Instant messaging platform WhatsApp announced on Sunday that the company has taken action against more than 6.5 million (i.e. 65 lacks) accounts in India during May. According to media reports, this action has been taken as per the new IT Rules 2021. The report states that out of the total banned accounts, 2.42 million were actively banned even before any user reports were received from the country.

Accounts banned based on complaint
According to the report, as of April, messaging platform WhatsApp, which has a user base of over 500 million in India, had built up a significant list of over 7.4 million banned accounts. In May, the platform received 3,912 reports related to complaints including "ban appeals" and out of them, 297 cases were resolved, and appropriate action was taken.

Hence the banned account
WhatsApp has banned these accounts keeping in mind the safety of the users under the new IT rule. Explain that under the IT Act 2021, social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users have to submit a user safety report to the IT ministry every month. According to the company, this report on user protection provides information on user complaints received, actions taken by WhatsApp, and proactive measures implemented by the platform to address abuses on their platform.
What is the whole process?

WhatsApp said that we take action on all complaints, provided it is not a duplicate of the previous complaint. Based on the complaint, an account is banned or the previously banned account is restored. As per the new IT rule, large digital platforms with more than 5 million users have to issue compliance reports every month. In this report, they have to give details of the complaints received and the action taken on them.
