Young children are very delicate and hence they are very vulnerable to seasonal diseases. Children face many diseases. But it is very common for them to have cough and cold. This infection gets cured in three to four days. But in the meantime, the child may be in a lot of discomforts. They have trouble eating anything and even breathing.

Generally, it is seen that when children have cough and cold, the mother gives a light massage by applying vaporizing rub on the chest and head of the child. But this does less benefit to the child and more harm. Sometimes, applying vaporizing rub increases the problem manifold.

Child experts also advise not to use a vaporizing rub for the child. So, in this article today, Dr KK Gupta, Senior Consultant Pediatrician, Saroj Hospital, Delhi, is telling you why children should not use vaporizing rub when they have cough and cold-

There may be vomiting of blood

You may not be aware, but using a vaporizing rub can also cause a child to vomit blood. Vaporizing rub contains camphor. If a vaporizing rub containing camphor is applied to children whose body is deficient in the G6PD enzyme, it can harm them and the child may even vomit blood.

Can irritate the respiratory system

You may be surprised to know, that the vaporizing rub can irritate the respiratory system instead of relaxing it. Usually, mothers use a vaporizing rub so that their child gets relief from it. But it can also have the opposite effect.

When it is applied to the skin in excess, excess amounts of camphor are inhaled through the baby's nose, which causes toxicity, which can lead to other respiratory infections. Not only this, but it can also irritate the inner respiratory lining in babies.

Skin can cause problems

Vaporizing rub is also advised not to use for children because the camphor present in it gets absorbed very easily into the skin. In such a situation, it causes toxicity to the baby's skin . Some children may also experience itching and other skin irritations due to the vaporizing rub.

Itchy eyes

Vaporizing rubs are not considered good for the skin as well as the eyes. Sometimes vaporizing rub is applied on the chest as well as the forehead. Vaporizing rubs can cause irritation and redness of the eyes when applied too close to the eyes. Due to this, water starts coming from the eyes of the child.

The feeling of cough or nausea

Young children sometimes suddenly inhale the vaporizing rub. Doing so can be extremely harmful to them. This can cause vomiting, nausea, cough and lethargy in the child. Therefore, as far as possible, do not use a vaporizing rub when the child is sick.

So now you should also avoid using vaporizing rub when the child has a cough and cold. Instead, you should prefer Steam.
