To increase domestic supply, the government has imposed a 20 percent export duty (20 percent export duty) on non-basmati rice, except that rice.

The government has taken this step amid a decrease in the area under the paddy crop in the current Kharif season and production is expected to be less than estimated. According to the notification issued by the Revenue Department on Thursday, this export duty will be applicable from September 9, Friday.

According to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), exports of rice varieties other than Usna rice and Basmati rice will attract a customs duty of 20 percent.

According to official data, India exported 21.2 million tonnes of rice in the financial year 2021-22. It had 39.4 lakh tonnes of basmati rice. Exports of non-basmati rice during this period stood at $6.11 billion. India exported non-basmati rice to more than 150 countries of the world during the financial year 2021-22.

It is noteworthy that according to the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the area under paddy has decreased by 5.62 percent to 383.99 lakh hectares in the current Kharif season. Due to less rainfall in some states of the country, the area under paddy has decreased. India is the largest producer of rice after China. India accounts for 40 percent of the global rice trade.
