Oily skin is one of the common problems these days, especially during this changing season. It doesn't matter if your skin is a little oily or a lot, as it can give rise to some skin problems like acne breakouts and blackheads due to clogging of pores and oily glow on your face etc.

Ageing progresses more slowly in oily or combination skin than in dry skin. This is because the oil (sebum) produced by the oil glands works to keep the skin lubricated, nourished and moisturized and prevents fine lines and wrinkles.

There are many reasons for oily skin. The sebaceous glands produce sebum to keep the skin soft and moisturized. When too much sebum is produced, the skin appears oily and oily skin can lead to acne and other skin problems. Hormones and genetics are the main factors for oily skin.

As the sebaceous glands mature with age, the production of sebum on the skin layer increases and the more androgens present in the body, the more sebum spreads through the pores. This sebum sits on the surface of the skin layer and makes it oily.

When an excess of these oils gets trapped in the pores and mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria, it gives rise to pimples and blackheads. There are many things you can do to treat your oily skin. However, avoid using random products on your skin which can further aggravate your skin problems and stick to tried and tested oily skin products.

Skincare routine for oily skin

To control the extra oil from the skin, it should be kept clean at all times. Cleanse your face twice or thrice a day so that dirt and oil do not get accumulated which leads to clogged pores and causes acne and other problems etc. Celebrity cosmetologist and director at FLAWLESS Cosmetic Clinic and ILACAD Institute, Dr Monica Kapoor is telling us about these tips.

Serum

Use a serum only if you want to deal with various skin problems. If your skin feels dehydrated, add a hydrating serum to your skincare routine. For brightening and anti-ageing effects, use a serum with brightening and anti-ageing properties.

Exfoliate oily skin once or twice a week. The excess sebum produced on the skin layer leads to dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, resulting in pimples, acne, whiteheads and blackheads.

Moisturizing

Oily skin needs regular moisturizing and hydration. Exposure of the skin to moisture will only encourage the fat glands to produce more oil to compensate. Apply an oil-free, non-comedogenic, water base moisturizer to your skin regularly.

Use of primer

Always use a primer while applying makeup, it helps to keep the sebum under control. This also makes your makeup last longer. Use an alcohol-free toner almost every day. Using a toner daily will help remove excess oil and dirt from your skin.

Use a basic mask or peel on your skin once a week. The best face mask for oily skin is the one that contains charcoal or Moroccan clay which keeps the skin calm and clean.

Use of sunscreen

Layering on sunscreen is an essential part of an oily skincare routine during the day. Always use a mineral-based product that contains zinc or titanium dioxide to absorb oil from the skin. Never sleep with makeup on. This will clog the pores of the skin and your other skin problems will also increase.

Exfoliation

Use a face mask on the skin after exfoliation. Apply it at least two or three times a week. Use a face mask that contains kaolin and bentonite clay, sandalwood powder, and MultaniMitti. All these things are great for oily skin as it gently absorbs the excess oil from the skin.
