Whenever there is talk of a healthy diet, milk is included in it. Milk is considered a good source of calcium and hence it is very essential for bones. However, most people are unable to consume milk even if they want to. This is because they are lactose intolerant. If such people consume the milk of cows, buffalo or any other mammal, then it causes them health problems.

Lactose is a type of sugar found naturally in the milk of most mammals. But people with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest this lactose present in milk. Which gives them problems. Consuming milk or other dairy products with such people can cause symptoms ranging from abdominal pain to gas and bloating. So, today in this article, Dietitian RituPuri of ESIC Hospital, Central Government Hospital is telling you about some such symptoms, which are seen in a person due to lactose intolerance-

Abdominal pain and bloating

Abdominal pain and bloating are very common with lactose intolerance. This is because the bacteria in the colon ferment the lactose. This lactose is not digested by the body, resulting in excess gas and water in the body. The pain in this condition is mostly around the navel and lower abdomen.

Diarrhoea problem

Often a person may also have to face the problem of diarrhoea due to lactose intolerance. In this condition, the stool becomes very thin and it comes out in the liquid form. This is because undigested lactose ferments in the colon. Due to this the amount of water in the intestine starts increasing and the person has the problem of diarrhoea.

Gas problem

Gas formation in the stomach is very common due to lactose intolerance. You may feel bloated in your stomach after consuming milk, or you may hear a rumbling sound in your lower abdomen. This is a sign that you are lactose intolerant. Actually, due to the fermentation of lactose in the colon, flatulence starts. However, this gas problem can vary greatly from person to person. Generally, the gas produced by the fermentation of lactose is odourless.

Constipation problem

Since lactose intolerance is linked to your digestive system, such a person may face any problem related to the digestive system. While some people suffer from diarrhoea due to lactose intolerance, some people also face constipation. However, this situation is relatively rarely seen. This is because consuming lactose causes an increase in the production of methane in a person's colon. Not only this, but a lactose intolerant person may also face discomfort during bowel movements.

Now if you also see these symptoms after consuming milk or milk products, then understand that you are also lactose intolerant.
