The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for the continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (-U) till December 31, 2024. As per the proposal, financial assistance is to be provided to complete the already approved 122.69 lakh houses by March 31, 2022.

What is PMAY-U?

Housing for All is one of the major programs being implemented by the Government of India through States/UTs/Central Nodal Agencies to provide pucca houses to all eligible beneficiaries in urban areas of the country. The scheme covers the entire urban area of ​​the country. In this, the Government of India provides financial assistance, and the State Government/Union Territories implement the scheme including a selection of beneficiaries.

It was informed that after achieving more than 55% of the target of providing pucca houses, the Center has extended the deadline for providing pucca houses to all households in rural India by two years to 2024. According to an old report, Rs 2.17 lakh crore in additional central and state funding will be provided to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin to achieve its target of building 2.95 crore houses.

'Housing for All Mission

Launched in June 2015, the scheme 'Housing for All' mission had an original deadline of March 2022, to provide pucca houses to all eligible urban beneficiaries. The government has set a target of allotting 2.95 crore pakka houses. About two crore pucca houses have been built so far. But there are still many families left, keeping in mind the scheme has been approved to continue till 2024.
