What is norovirus

"Norovirus" belongs to a family of viruses that cause vomiting and diarrhea in the sufferer. It is a widespread and contagious virus, which can be spread through infected people, contaminated food, or contaminated surfaces. Norovirus is also known as the winter vomiting bug. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 685 million cases of norovirus occur worldwide every year. While this virus causes about 200,000 deaths in a year.

Caused by norovirus

Norovirus can spread to people in several different ways. The virus can be spread by contact with an infected person, touching contaminated surfaces, or consuming contaminated food or water. Anyone can become infected with norovirus and it can make anyone they come in contact with sick. The main reasons for the spread of this virus are the following-

  • eating contaminated food
  • coming into contact with a person infected with norovirus
  • touching the mouth with your hand after coming in contact with a contaminated surface or object

The symptoms of this virus usually appear within 24 to 72 hours. But if its symptoms appear for a long time, then you should contact the doctor immediately. Some people who are infected with norovirus do not show symptoms, but they can still infect other people. Some common symptoms of norovirus are:

  • vomiting
  • abdominal pain or cramps
  • muscle pain
  • headache and body aches

Protection against norovirus

To avoid this virus, you must take special care of cleanliness. Keep washing your hands from time to time with soap and clean water. Apart from this, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly and use them. If you are eating non-veg especially fish, then cook it well.
