The Kalkaji temple is situated on the Suryakut mountain of the Aravalli mountain range. It is one of the ancient Siddhapeeths of the country. Thousands of people come here daily during Navratri to have the darshan of the mother and their wishes are fulfilled.

History
The present temple was established by Baba Balak Nath. At the behest of Baba Balak Nath, Akbar Shah (1806 to 1837) renovated the temple. It is believed that the deities worshiped Shiva (Shakti) here after being persecuted by the Asuras. Mother Parvati revealed Kaushiki Devi when the gods asked for a boon. The goddess killed many demons, but could not kill Raktabeej. Then Mother Parvati revealed Bhrikuti to Mahakali and she killed Raktabeej. It is said that before the war with the Kauravas, Lord Krishna along with the Pandavas worshiped Bhagwati here.

Specialty of the temple
The main temple has 12 gates, indicating the 12 months. Different forms of Mother have been depicted near each door. The 36 gates in the circumambulation of the temple are symbols of Matrikas. It is believed that all the planets are under their control during the eclipse, so the rest of the temples are usually closed during the eclipse, while the Kalkaji temple remains open.
