We all stick to the mobile phone for many tasks throughout the day, from paying for ration, checking messages and emails, making calls, or watching videos. This device has become an integral part of our lives, but is it also proving to be a 'big enemy' for us?

In many studies, health experts have been warning people about excessive use of mobile phones. From eye problems to mental health disorders, the risk of this has been seen. Is mobile phone also increasing impotence?

In a study conducted on excessive use of mobile phones and ways of keeping them, scientists said that it is increasing serious problems for the reproductive organs. Keeping the mobile in the pocket of the pants is hurting the genitals of men, which can also lead to the risk of impotence in the long term. This device is harmful to the reproductive health of both men and women.

Mobile phones and their impact on reproductive health

Medical reports show that in the last four to five decades, cases of fertility problems and low sperm count in men have increased rapidly. So far, environmental and lifestyle factors have been considered responsible for this. Some researchers believe that devices emitting low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic fields such as mobile phones are also affecting male fertility.

Studies also show that increasing the use of mobile phones can also reduce sperm concentration and count. Such conditions persisting for a long time can also increase the risk of impotence.

What did the study find out?

Scientists from the University of Geneva and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute investigated the effect of mobile phone use and its storage methods on male reproductive health. A study conducted for 13 years shows that smartphone use is one of the factors increasing the decrease in sperm concentration and total sperm count (TSC) in young adult men.

Most men keep their mobile phones in their pant pockets. This can also have a negative impact on the health of reproductive organs and sperm. This is also affecting the quality of eggs in women.

Excessive use of phones can be harmful

According to the report published in the Fertility and Sterility Journal, researchers examined 2,886 men aged 18 to 22 years in military recruitment centers between 2005 and 2018. Laboratory experts took semen samples and studied the concentration of sperm in them, total sperm count (TSC), and their motility. Apart from lifestyle habits, participants were also asked how often they use mobile phones.

The findings of the study revealed that men who used the phone once or twice a day had a much higher average concentration of sperm than men who used their phones more than 20 times a day.

Avoid keeping the phone in the pants

The researchers also asked the participants where they keep it when they are not using the phone? Most people said they keep it in a pant-shirt or jacket pocket. About 85.7% of the study group (2,368 men) said they keep their phones in their pant pockets when not in use.

The study model did not find any link between keeping the phone in the pants and poor semen quality, although experts believe that keeping the phone in this way can also hurt reproductive health.
