The year 2024 is a 'leap year'. This year the month of February will have 29 days, not 28, and the year will be 366 days. That means there is one more day in a leap year compared to other years. What is leap year called?
A leap year is a year in which there is one more day than any other year. According to the Gregorian calendar, there are 365 days in a year, but in leap years there are 366 days. In such a situation, the year in which there is one more day is called a leap year.

Why does leap year come?
There is an important reason for one extra day every four years. The number of days in a year depends on the Earth's revolution around the Sun. When the Earth revolves around the Sun, there are day and night and the seasons change.

The Earth takes approximately 365.242 days to complete one revolution around the Sun. That means it takes an extra 6 hours in a year. If the additional time taken by the Earth to revolve around the Sun, 0.242 days (6 hours), is added four times, then it is equal to one day. This remaining time of 0.242 days is added to four years and converted into one day.

So every four years one day in the calendar is longer than other years. This is called a leap year.

What will happen if there is no leap year?
The Gregorian calendar started from the year of the birth of Lord Jesus. Four years later the first leap year was celebrated. But if we do not celebrate leap year, we will go ahead of the time cycle. If there is no extra day in the calendar in four years, then after 100 years we will be 25 days ahead, due to which the change in weather will not be detected.

When will be the next leap year?
Leap year was celebrated in the year 2020, after which there is a leap year after four years i.e. in 2024. The next leap year will come in 2028.

How is leap year determined?
Some calculations can be done to find out whether a year is a leap year. If a year is a leap year then that year can be divided exactly by four. For example, 2024 can be divided completely by 4.
