Origin and History of Krishna River

Krishna River originates from Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra. It is believed that the Krishna Bai Temple at Old Mahabaleshwar is the birthplace of the Krishna River. Krishna Bai Mandir is an ancient Shiva temple where a stream emerges from the mouth of a cow. It is believed that this stream itself later becomes the Krishna river. Krishnabai Temple is located in Mahabaleshwar near Panchganga Temple. The look of this age-old temple looks even more beautiful during the monsoon.

India's fourth-largest river

Notably, the Krishna is the fourth largest river in India in terms of area and flow. Its tributaries are Venna River, Koyna River, Dudhganga River, Bhima River, Ghataprabha River, Malaprabha River, Tungabhadra River, Musi River and Dindi Rivers. The largest tributaries of the Krishna River are the Tungabhadra River and the Bhima River which originates from the Bhimashankar Hills. The Krishna and some of its tributaries begin their journey in the Western Ghats. Panchganga Temple is a 4,500-year-old temple where the Krishna River originates from the mouth of a cow (Gomukh) along with the rivers Venna, Koyna, Gayatri and Savitri. However, all these rivers later join the Krishna river itself.

Several popular waterfalls are formed by the Krishna River and its tributaries. Wildlife Sanctuary on Krishna River

The Krishna river basin is one of the most fertile regions and also contains forest reserves. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagarjuna-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary are some of the top wildlife sanctuaries in the basin of the Krishna River. All these areas make this river different from other rivers. The largest cities on the Krishna River are Sangli, Haldi city in Maharashtra and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh are situated on the banks of this river. The Krishna River originates in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and drains into the Bay of Bengal at Hansladevi village in Andhra Pradesh.
